Solar particles are still hitting the earth's atmosphere after a giant solar flare happened nearly two days ago. This geomagnetic storm is causing auroras over much of Northern Europe, but has had little impact on GPS and cell phone signals as originally feared.
This is the second significant solar flare in the last year, with another one hitting in September, 2011. MSUM Professor Doctor Juan Cabanela says the energy released by this flare is enough to power the entire earth for a few years.
Dr. Juan Cabanela – MSUM Astronomy Professor: “It just basically snaps and picks up a bunch of gas on the sun and just hurls it up. It also tends to reach a couple hundred million megatons of energy in the process.”
