There are signs of improvement at the Waubun-Ogema-White Earth School District after a $1.4 million education grant. The funds were given in the 2010-2011 school year to improve reading and math scores.
They paid for tutoring and teacher evaluation along with efforts to improve parent communication among other things. Some students have shown a twenty percent improvement in reading scores from 54% to 74%, but Principal Michael Cary says test scores can be complicated.
Michael Cary – Waubun Principal: “We saw a dramatic increase in our reading scores in our tenth grade level, but then we saw slight decreases in the eighth grade level math test so we've seen some ups some downs. All in all I would say the picture has looked better.”
The grant money will last three years.
