Mayor Dennis Walaker and Cass County Commissioner Darrell Vanyo are back from a trip to Washington DC. They worked to make sure all steps are on track for the diversion project on a national level.
We are just a few steps away from having the diversion project finalized with congress and ready for construction. The first step is the signing of the chief’s report is already completed and now the next step is the decision from the assistant secretary of the army corps of engineers to sign off on the office of management and budget.
The assistant secretary has until April 8th to make the decision to move forward. Commissioner Vanyo feels strongly that the secretary will sign off on the document. After this is signed there are just two more steps which include authorization and funding. Vanyo says this trip was positive and the city is heading in all the right directions.
Darrell Vanyo – Cass County Commissioner: “You have to be in front of the people to make sure it doesn't get on a back burner, I think the idea to go there and say we are interested, is there anything you need us to be doing further, that was another question we asked, to keep it moving and we were told we were doing all of the right things. The corps of engineers actually thinks of our project as a model project.”
Officials are also trying to be included in the water resource development act. This act will give the project additional funding. The next authorization of this act will most likely come through congress in 2013.
