More high-tech options are helping pet owners keep track of their animals. The Circle of Friends Humane Society offers pet owners microchips, which are implanted between a pet's shoulder blades.

Many local vets and police departments have a scanner that reads the chip to help owners find their lost pets, and the humane society plans to get a scanner of its own.

Arlette Moen – Executive Director: “Make sure that those collars and tags are on at all times, a lot of people say I gave my dog a bath, I didn't put their collar back on and that's when so many of them get lost is when those collars and tags are off.”

Micro Chips are available at the Humane Society in Grand Forks and Fargo-Moorhead for between $25 and $30.
