Moorhead, Minn. (WDAY TV) - More Minnesota veterans are heading back to school. The number of veterans enrolled in universities across the state more than doubled between 2006 and 2011 from about five thousand to 12-thousand.

Many are earning their degrees in areas like social work and mass communication. Veterans often have difficulty finding work. The average unemployment rate for Minnesota veterans in 2011 was about 12 percent, twice as high as the civilian rate.

DAVID BELLEFEUILLE - MN Departmet of Veterans Affairs: “Maybe they served 4, 6 or 8 years in the military so stepping out of the military they may have a military occupational specialty something they've done in the military, but it may not be a direct correlation to something in the civilian sector.”

Tonight at 6, we'll introduce you to a veteran-who at 45-is earning his bachelor's degree.
