Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - We all have them: Cups we never use, sitting in the back of our cupboard. But one NDSU art professor is turning those cups into art.

It's called the Misfit Cup Liberation Project. A few weeks, Michael Strand invited the public to drop off their unwanted cups at the Plains Art Museum.

They were also asked to explain-on paper-the story behind the cup, like who and where the cups came from. Strand says, in a way, the project allows people to leave their past behind.

MICHAEL STRAND – Artist: “I think the ex-con cup up there, which was created by a gentleman who spent a year in prison and three years out using the same cup, this project gave him the opportunity to kind of move on from that point in this life.”

In exchange for donating their cups, people got to take home new, ceramic cups-created by Strand himself.
