After trashing a high school locker room in Wahpeton following a buzzer-beater loss, Red River High School today disciplined its students and the boys' basketball coach. Two players will have to write apology letters and pay for the damages. They both will sit out a game, and the basketball coach will receive a letter of reprimand.
It was at this game between Red River and Wahpeton that an unexpected ending - a win by Wahpeton over undefeated Red River - would then result in this. Red River players after the game took frustration of a loss out on the locker room. A light ripped down, a shower hand rail ripped off, and a bench damaged.
Rick Jacobson – Wahpeton Superintendent: “Kids not just in Grand Forks or Wahpeton or Bowman to wherever. It’s maybe an eye-opener, but kids have to be accountable for their actions.
What we do know tonight is the Red River coaches never checked the locker room before leaving Wahpeton.
Rick Jacobson: “It is an unfortunate thing that happened after a good game.”
Wahpeton Athletic Director Mike McCall says Red River administrators have investigated and talked with the Grand Forks team.
Mike McCall – Wahpeton Athletic Director: “They are not pushing this under the rug.”
McCall says the locker room incident has been blown out of proportion.
Mike McCall: “I got a call from the coach apologizing for what happened. I’ve been in contact with players and administration and they are taking care of this internally.”
No criminal charges are expected in this case, but a bill has been sent to Red River for the damage. Meantime, administrators hope lesson are learned.
Rick Jacobson: “Hopefully it’s a good reminder of something you don’t do.”
No police report on the damage was filed with the Wahpeton law enforcement.
