Brandon, MN (WDAY TV) - Roads in the region coated with rain, sleet and snow have turned deadly. The four young women who died in an interstate crash between Brandon and Alexandria right around mile marker 97 were college roommates heading back to North Dakota State University. Brandon is about 15 miles west of Alexandria. A road block had been set up at the Brandon exit, closing the eastbound lane of I94.

The Minnesota State Patrol says the teens' car crossed the median of Interstate 94 near Alexandria Monday afternoon and was struck by an SUV, which was hit by a third vehicle. The crash caused a 6 vehicle pileup.

The State Patrol says Lauren Peterson, of Prior Lake, Megan Sample of Rogers, Danielle Renninger of Excelsior, all 18, and 19-year-old Jordan Playle of Elk River were killed. Authorities say Peterson was driving and lost control of the vehicle. The university is preparing grief counselors all students.

Prakash (pruh-KAHSH') Matthew, the school's vice president for student affairs, says three of the victims shared a dormitory suite. The fourth lived in a separate hall.

Heavy snow, fog, strong winds and temperatures hovering around freezing made travel difficult Monday. The driver of the SUV and two people in the third vehicle suffered non-life threatening injuries.
