It is the shot seen 'round the world; a hockey player from Detroit Lakes whose smooth move and spectacular goal have now gone viral. Eighteen year-old Alex Mason is still basking in the limelight after video of his classic, inventive shot hit the internet.

If you ask his hockey coach, Alex Mason of Detroit Lakes, is one of those dream players.

Chris Denardo Lakers Hockey Coach: “The funniest thing is he's about as humble as you get."

Smart, aggressive, a team player, unselfish. So imagine the irony and excitement surrounding his amazing goal when video of it became an overnight internet sensation.

Alex Mason – Lakers Hockey Player: “I had no idea it was going to escalate this quickly."

It would be at this game against……..that Alex man handled the puck.

Alex Mason: “Getting the puck up cause we're on the penalty kill."

That Alex manhandled the puck a breakaway shorthanded goal. Now typically as Alex moves left the goalie would drop down and move right. That's when Alex makes his next move.

Alex Mason: “I make sure the puck is flat when I’m coming down. I put my stick kind of at an angle like that so the puck will lean up a little bit easier to pick up you slide it way left so the goalie will move with you. You pick it up and slide it right like that and just toss it in. Just thought it was a new breakaway move I could use on goalies because I normally get stuffed on all my other ones.”

That sweet move has sparked stories in media worldwide from the Washington Post to the NHL Network.

Alex Mason: "Kind of made me smile like, ‘Holy this is for real,’ one thing can get you noticed."

The hype would make most high school athletes feel like a legend. Not the style of Alex Mason.

Chris Denardo: "Since I’ve been here and all my years of coaching he's one of the greatest kids I’ve been able to coach. Like I said before he's extremely humble he had probably my hardest working player that I got um he's always one of those guys looking out for his teammates before himself"

An enrolled member of White Earth and dancer, Alex knows young people are looking up to him.

Alex Mason: "It's kind of a good feeling knowing that people are watching and cheering for you and knowing I can walk down the hall 'Hey that's Alex Mason' and they'll give me high fives knowing I just made their day by giving a high five."

After practicing the move for months, the first try at a game was a charm. The coach is sure glad the puck went in. For Alex, it is just another day at the rink, living out Mason Mania. As the kids say, that is one sick goal.

The goal will be spotlighted tomorrow night on the NHL Network.
