Hawley man accused of sexually assaulting teenager is in custody

MOORHEAD – A Hawley man who faces two felony charges after he allegedly sexually assaulted an intoxicated and passed out 17-year-old girl at a party here last summer is in custody in the Clay County Jail.

An arrest warrant was issued Monday for 26-year-old Christopher Keith Haats, who is charged with one count each of third- and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Moorhead Police Lt. Tory Jacobson said Haats was arrested Wednesday morning at his girlfriend's home in Detroit Lakes through the assistance of the Clay County warrants division and Becker County authorities. Haats was booked into the Clay County Jail at about noon Wednesday.

According to documents filed in Clay County District Court, police responded to reports of a sexual assault the morning of Aug. 19.

The alleged victim told police that she had been intoxicated during a party the previous night and believed she had been assaulted after she passed out.

Documents state police obtained DNA tests from all the men who had been present at the party and allegedly matched DNA taken with Haats.
