A long-time supporter of the Fighting Sioux nickname is changing his tune. UND hockey coach Dave Hakstol says mandating the use of it by law creates insurmountable challenges for the university.

At his weekly press conference today Hakstol says the NCAA won't change its stance, and he thinks the Big Sky will move on without UND. Hakstol says he doesn't think UND can be a successful Division 1 entity across the board.

Dave Hakstol – UND Hockey Coach: “Potentially I think our hockey program could be diminished over time, if we continue to mandate to use the name.”

Frank Burggraf – Nickname Supporter: “Consider this: his contract hasn't been signed yet, which is unheard of. They usually have for recruiting that contract signed, so that coach knows going forward and moving his staff our for recruiting. I'll let you answer that. Put the words in your mouth, what would you do?”

Hakstol says as long as he's coach his teams will continue to use the history and tradition of the Fighting Sioux to develop teams and learn life lessons.
