Two-thirds of Native Americans in North Dakota live below the poverty level. With that number in mind, the city of Fargo, Native American groups and NDSU are trying to obtain funding for the proposed Urban Indian Health and Wellness Center of Fargo-Moorhead.
The center would be a clinic, providing basic health services. It would also send nurses and aides out to provide home health care. It would be open to everyone regardless of income or ethnic background.
Willard Yellow Bird, Jr. – City of Fargo: “They're my people. They're the ones that though I have health insurance 60% of them or even more than that don't have health insurance.”
The wellness center is expected to cost eight million dollars. Officials are trying to apply for private grant money. Yellow Bird hopes to have it open in the next five years.
