Papa John's scrambling to keep up with free pizza promotion

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Employees at a local pizza place are seeing a spike in pizzas after a Super Bowl promotion. Papa John's promised its Reward Members free pizza and pop if the coin toss landed on heads. It did.

Employees at a local pizza place are seeing a spike in pizzas after a Super Bowl promotion. Papa John's promised its Reward Members free pizza and pop if the coin toss landed on heads. It did.

First, Papa John's gave away one million pizzas during 16 weeks of the regular NFL football season. Now, millions more are being made.

Brad Deelstra – Papa John’s Area Supervisor: “A week after the Super Bowl is traditionally pretty quiet.

That was then…this is now. This week is proving to be quite the boom in business for Papa John's, nationally, including in the metro.

Brad Deelstra: “It's something out of the ordinary. It creates a little buzz.”

Since Monday, customers have been marching into the store after a frenzy of football fans won free food.

Trent Seibel – Papa John’s General Manager: “You stay busy all day long.”

For the first time, the pizza place took a big gamble at the big game. If the coin toss landed on heads, registered reward members would get a free large pizza and two liter of pop.

Brad Deelstra: “We were sort of hoping for tails.”

Josh Seppelt – Moorhead: “I signed up like two hours before the Super Bowl because I knew I was going to get a free pizza if they flipped heads.”

The plan, all an effort to drive demand online. Well, it worked. Customers had to register there. Now, they have to order that free food there as well.”

Trent Seibel: “We don't have to take the time to take a phone order so then it just pops up up there and we make it so it's actually kind of nice.

In five days alone, the three locations in Fargo Moorhead have given away 600 pizzas. That's on top of the ones, people bought. The stores have had to add staff to deal with the spike in business. They may be losing money now, but the hope is in the long run, to gain loyal customers.

Brad Deelstra: “It's kind of unchartered waters for us so we don't really know what to expect.”

Customers should have a code in their emails. You have until the 19th to redeem that code, then two weeks or until March 4th, to cash in on free food.
