Water projects in Dakotas getting federal money
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Water projects in the Dakotas are getting some of the $50 million in funding being doled out by the federal Interior Department for water infrastructure in the West.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Water projects in the Dakotas are getting some of the $50 million in funding being doled out by the federal Interior Department for water infrastructure in the West.
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says in a statement that water is "the lifeblood of our communities ... especially in rural areas in the West."
In North Dakota, the Garrison Diversion project is getting about $11 million to provide a new water storage reservoir for the Spirit Lake tribe and replace poor-quality wells in Logan and McIntosh counties.
The Lewis and Clark Rural Water System under construction in South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota is getting $5 million.
The new funding is in addition to about $16 million the Bureau of Reclamation is providing for the Mni Wiconi (MIH'-nee wuh-CHOH'-nee) project in South Dakota.
