People in Viking, Minnesota are pulling together to fulfill a cancer victim's wish.
In early November, 51-year-old Dwayne Myers was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and given just two months to live.
Doreen Myers - Dwayne's Wife: “Who would have thought I'd be a widow at 47 with two teenage daughters?”
Dwayne was deeply upset to leave his wife with his list of unfinished projects. At the top of that list, a barn to house their cows.
Doreen Myers - Dwayne's Wife: “I never thought it would get done.”
But the community became determined to make sure that it did. Two weeks ago, Dwayne watched through the window as more than 50 friends, family and complete strangers gathered to work on the barn. He died three days later. Today, volunteers gathered again, to continue working.
Dayna Melvie & Val Lindgren - Benefit Organizers: “Being in a small community, you just pull together. Whether you know them or not, you pull together.”
Phones have been ringing off the hook with people wanting to help more.
Dayna Melvie & Val Lindgren - Benefit Organizers: “People have been calling me..where can I drop off my things for the bake sale or silent auction... it's just been overwhelming. To be a small community like this and pull off something like this is just wonderful.”
A benefit for the family will be held Sunday at Viking School from 11-2. Donations can be sent to the Dwayne Myers Benefit Account Northern State Bank in Thief River Falls.
