If there's any program that has seen the benefits of a strong recruiting class, it's NDSU. Just two years removed from a 3-8 season, the Bison are the defending FCS champions, led by 11 members from the 2010 class.
Craig Bohl hopes that same ratio in 2012 will turn into another title team. We're pleased to be joined by the head coach on signing day.
Dom: “You have 18 players in this year's class, how would you describe them?”
Craig Bohl: “Really a good class, Dom. Spread out – 18 players are coming, 9 on offense, 9 on defense. I think we addressed all our needs. We certainly got a bunch of big guys, and you know it’s great to. This area has really produced some great football players, and we feel like we signed the best ones.”
Dom: “Let's focus on North Dakota, always big for you, and so is Kindred's Jack Plankers, what do you like about him?”
Craig Bohl: “First of all, they say recruit them bigger than the bus or faster than the bus. I think he’s about as big as a bus. He stands 6’7”, 280 pounds, and just a heck of a player and really good student. It was really important to play Bison football.”
Dom: “You got 3 wide receivers led by Bemidji's Carey Woods, what makes him special?”
Craig Bohl: “Well, boy, what a great athlete. He’s a multi-sport guy, he’s been an excellent basketball player, but he has things you just can’t coach. He’s a great talent – great hand-eye coordination, great skill. He’s got excellent speed as well.”
Dom: “NDSU also got a quarterback in this class, from your home state of Nebraska in Derek McGinnis, what stands out to you?”
Craig Bohl: “You know what? I lived in Crete for a while actually Dom. Derek won an awful lot of games as a high school quarterback. His dad’s a great high school coach down there. He operates our offense mechanically, really sound. He’s got good height and great leadership skills. We’re excited about him leading out football team.”
Dom: “There are 3 other local players you signed, Landon Lechler, MJ Stumpf and Justin Arp all from small North Dakota towns.”
Craig Bohl: “We’re really excited Landon’s decided to come to NDSU. Again, a tall, rangy guy. MJ – boy, what a can-do guy from Harvey, and Justin Arp from right down the road in Forman. We’re excited about those guys.”
Dom: “You told me - not neccesarily a National Championship will make it an easy way to recruit. What are your thoughts on this being done?”
Craig Bohl: “Well I think it certainly helps. I also think it bodes really well for the future. We’re very excited about Bison football.”
