Grand Forks, ND (WDAZ TV) - A lack of the white stuff means more of the green stuff for many cities. Grand Forks has only plowed streets three times this winter.
You might say the Grand Forks Street department is on easy street this winter because of the number times it has had to plow.
MARK AUBOL - Grand Forks Streets Superintendent: "This winter season three times. So that is pretty unusual.”
If this trend of warm weather and little snow continues, it will be one for the record books and check book. The city has saved an estimated 50 thousand dollars in fuel and overtime so far. The money not spent carries over into the following years budget.
Aubol: "Say if fuel costs go way up and I need to have some money to balance that out. I can use that cash carry over to help out to help me."
Street Superintendent Mark Aubol says if enough money is saved, it can be used for his departments wish list.
Aubol: "I could buy an attachment for a plow. I could by some tires and things like that for the payloader and motor graders. "
The lack of snow hasn't meant perfect driving conditions. With the mix of freezing and melting temperatures, crews have had to battle icy streets.
Mark Aubol – Grand Forks Streets Superintendent: "When it's warmer out as the two temperatures and when the temperatures drop. There is moisture in the air and their is frost on your pavement."
Warmer temps are not as taxing on snow removal equipment, which is another money saver. Aubol says his department will savor this winter because they know it's not likely they will get another soon.
