Devils Lake, ND (WDAY TV) -- Lack of snow didn't hamper the 28th Annual Ice Fishing Tournament in Devils Lake. In fact, it was the biggest ever. The Volunteer Fire Department sponsors that fun every year.

Local fishers, Minot, Grand Forks, even fishers from across the *big* pond, known as the Atlantic come to cast a line and *hopefully* reel in the grand prize.

Curt Latenereffe/21 year vet: "It's like christmas its like a family event..Come as a family event, there's anywhere from 15 to 20 of us out here there's obviously 4 of us out here right now getting the holes all ready while the rest of us is making the turtle back and coffee and chocolate milk to bring out here."

Devils Lake opened at 11-am. It was like black friday on ice. But this year, first place isn't the winner.

Jim Moe/FISHING TOURNAMENT CO-CHAIR: "It makes it for a very interesting tournament, they're not fishing for 1st, they're fishing for second."

Its all about the size of the fish...some people prep for months for the 2-hour tournament but others are talked into it.

Eric Laudenschlader/minot 1st timer: "He said he bought me a ticket a long time ago and he said I'm going fishing so I guess I'm going fishing."

And the tournament isn't just for fishing vets, first timers like me also have a shot at the grand prize.

Jim Moe: "Can bring a little kid out here, have a fun family day or you can bring what the experts think they know it all and you can watch a kid beat them out so that's awesome."

Some Grand Forks folks brought good luck charms...

Shelly & Gary: "I'd really like to catch a fish, catch a fish and just win something."

Anglers keep in mind, at the end of the day first place doesn't win.
