Valley City, ND (WDAY TV) - It's Election Day in Valley City. People are heading to the polls in a special election to decide whether Mayor Bob Werkhoven will keep his job.

It's Election Day in Valley City. People are heading to the polls in a special election to decide whether Mayor Bob Werkhoven will keep his job.

Mayor Werkhoven is taking on embattled former police Chief Dean Ross. It was just months ago that Ross had allegations dropped that he mishandled thousands of dollars in public funds. City commissioner Ken Evenson is also fighting to keep his spot against Duane Magnuson

Voter turnout is already over 1,700 with 659 absentee ballots, and only expected to increase with people just now getting off of work. Polls opened at seven this morning and there has been a steady line ever since.

The only place to vote in Valley City is at city hall. Once the polls close, the city auditor says every vote will be counted by hand.
