Fergus Falls, MN (WDAY TV) -- A pilot is sharing his story of a 2nd chance at life. The man from Maine was to be flying the first plane that crashed into the World Trade Center.

It was a normal day for Steve Scheibner, September 10th, 2001.

He did his normal routine, packed his bags and got ready for his trip from Boston to Los Angeles on American Airlines flight 11.

STEVE: "There is a half and hour window the day before when they open up a flight like the one I was scheduled to fly, to a pilot that is more senior to me."

A few hours later Scheibner checked his scheduling website, and saw his name had been removed.

STEVE: "Tom McGuinness, a senior pilot to me, called American Airlines that afternoon and bumped me off that trip, so they erased my name and they put toms in."

Scheibner went about his day, then the next morning he like most Americans knew something was terribly wrong. Scheibner and his wife were glued to the television trying to make sense of what they were watching.

STEVE: "I wanted to find out the names of the people that were on those flights because I knew I would know the crews."

It wasn't until after Scheibner did some investigating, he discovered it was supposed to be him, sitting in the right seat of that 757 American Airlines plane.

STEVE: "Still words cant describe that moment, you are just kind of dumb founded, you feel a little twinge of guilt, you feel kind of angry."

Although it is hard to let go of the past, Scheibner doesn't let it fear or stop him now. He still fly's on an American Airlines 757 three of four times a month.

STEVE: "There is probably not a day that goes by that I don't think about living my life with a sense of urgency, because I feel like god has given me a purpose and a direction in my life."

Scheibner continues to inspire others, telling his story around the world, letting people know they should cherish everyday like it were their last, because you never know when it might be.
