After record-breaking heat earlier this month, dangerous cold has settled over the Dakotas.
The National Weather Service issued extreme cold warnings in both North Dakota and South Dakota early Thursday, as temperatures dropped into the double digits below zero and wind chills were even lower.
The cold follows recent record-high temperatures in many cities in the two states, with the mercury soaring into the 50s, 60s and even 70s.
The Weather Service says the jet stream that had been staying to the north in Canada has now dipped south of the border, ushering the cold into the Northern Plains.
