It's a rare first this winter. The city of Fargo is finally applying sand to icy streets after the light dusting of snow.

All of its eight sanders have been spending the day spreading stockpiled sand on slick spots. Avenues are worse than streets. Some dayside employees worked longer hours to help with the work on about 1,800 lane miles. Crews are mixing a little salt with sand.

The city had only used salt and liquid until now because of the unseasonably mild months. Salt works to about 15 degrees.

Lee Anderson – Fargo Public Works: “Up until this point this winter, we've been able to pretty much melt everything. Now with falling temperatures today, it's going to be more of a sanding, traction event so we'll be using really the first sand of the year.”

The work will continue overnight.
