The small city of Hawley is proving it’s on the cutting edge of green energy. The city has installed two solar powered welcome signs on the east and west sides of Highway 10. The LED lights shine at night using solar energy stored in batteries on the solar panels. Each hour, the lights use the same amount of energy as a 40 watt light bulb. The city says it’s saving a thousand dollars a year with the environmentally friendly signs.

Lisa Jetvig – City of Hawley: “Well I think it's important to show that we're making an effort to be green and that we're looking at ways to really save the taxpayer's money to do good projects, being as economical as possible.”

The two solar panels cost nearly $5,400.
