Sioux nickname backers set up shop outside arena

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A group that wants the University of North Dakota to keep the Fighting Sioux nickname took its petition drive outside on Saturday.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A group that wants the University of North Dakota to keep the Fighting Sioux nickname took its petition drive outside on Saturday.

The Grand Forks Herald says the group set up three folding tables and used small handheld flashlights to help gather signatures near the Ralph Engelstad Arena, where UND played Minnesota in men's hockey.

Nickname supporters are offering two measures. One would repeal the North Dakota Legislature's decision last month to allow UND to drop the nickname. The other would change the North Dakota Constitution to require UND to continue using the name.

The group must collect 13,500 signatures by Feb. 7 for the legislative measure.

Organizers had hoped to set up inside the arena, but a judge ruled that arena officials did not have to allow it.
