Despite little snow the Special Olympics Winter Games are underway in Valley City. The only event possible for now was handball. About a dozen teams and more than 100 athletes are participating in the games this weekend. Athletes are divided into different divisions based on skill level. Special Olympics officials say these events provide athletes with the sense of a normal life.

Kathy Meagher – President of Special Olympics ND: “We see as Special Olympics as a sport movement that we use the vehicle of sport to change lives."

Winning teams are eligible for the next National Games in New Jersey in 2014.
