JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Sen. Dave Nething says this is his last year in the office.

Nething announced Thursday that he plans to complete his term, which ends Dec. 1. Then, he says, it's time to retire.

The Jamestown Sun reports that Nething is the longest-serving state senator. The Jamestown resident was first elected in 1966 and most recently was re-elected to the District 12 post in 2008.

Nething served on the Judiciary and Transportation committees, as well as the Interim Higher Education Committee. He told reporters during a small news conference Thursday that it's time he step aside. He says he has "no regrets" and wishes his successor the best.
