Churchs Ferry to remain incorporated after vote

CHURCHS FERRY, N.D. (AP) — The few remaining residents of the flood-threatened North Dakota town of Churchs Ferry have voted to maintain it.

Unofficial results of Tuesday's election show five people voted to continue as an incorporated city, while two voted to dissolve the community. The Ramsey County Commission meets Friday to certify the results.

Churchs Ferry was incorporated in 1897 and had a peak population of about 450 people 13 years later. The federal government bought out most residents in 2000 because of the flood threat from the rising Devils Lake. Only about a dozen people remain in the town along U.S. Highway 2.
