Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- The Farm Bill was the main topic of discussion between local congressional leaders and area Farmers today at NDSU's Ag Research Facility.

Shortly after touring NDSU's state of the art facility, the congressional delegation sat down with leaders in several different growers' associations.

North Dakota is one of the nation's agricultural leaders, raising more than 35 crops state-wide. Topics ranged from Crop Insurance to drain tiling, to making sure the sugar program doesn't change.

Leaders are hoping to pass a new Farm Bill in 2012.

ND Ag Commissioner, Doug Goehring, says, "Agriculture is responsible for about 18-percent of our Gross Domestic Product, that's pretty big, that's pretty important. Also, crop insurance, it's the only risk management tool that we actually have."

Farm Bill discussions in Congress are expected to start sometime between late January and early February.
