North Dakota Judge Taking up Fighting Sioux Petitions Case

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Supporters of the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname want to ask hockey fans to sign a petition to put the issue on the statewide ballot.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Supporters of the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname want to ask hockey fans to sign a petition to put the issue on the statewide ballot.

They're asking to be let inside UND's Ralph Engelstad Arena to gather signatures. On Tuesday a state judge will hear arguments about whether to grant the request.

UND officials want to get rid of the nickname. They don't want to allow Fighting Sioux advocates to gather support inside the hockey arena.

Judge Sonja Clapp earlier denied a request from nickname supporters who wanted to be allowed inside the arena. She's listening to new arguments on the issue on Tuesday.

Clapp says she hopes to make a decision before UND's hockey series with Minnesota on Friday and Saturday.
