FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A Fargo surgeon accused of drugging and sexually assaulting his wife says the charges were made up to boost his wife's position in their divorce and child custody dispute.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A Fargo surgeon accused of drugging and sexually assaulting his wife says the charges were made up to boost his wife's position in their divorce and child custody dispute.

Jon Norberg hasn't admitted wrongdoing but acknowledges there is enough evidence to convict him of charges of felony reckless endangerment and sexual assault. He faces up to five years in prison. He's lost his medical license indefinitely.

KFGO reports that Norberg issued a statement Friday defending himself against the accusations. Norberg says he and his wife both agreed to the use of propofol in their home to control his wife's anxiety and pain, but that he never raped her while she was sedated.

The Associated Press typically does not identify victims of sex crimes, but Norberg's wife, Alonna, has spoken publicly.
