With the start of the New Year we are taking one last look back at some of the biggest stories from 2011. The past 3 nights we recapped January through September. Now Todd Kurtz takes a look at the closing months of 2011.
We start on October 10th; a high risk sex offender escaped a prisoner transport van at a rest on i-94 just outside of tower city. A nearly 24 hour search ensued. It would be farmers who'd come to police help, as they combined a cornfield and flushed Joseph Megna out and into custody.
November 9th, a moorhead jury finds 39 year-old Tracy Zornes of Naytahwaush guilty of first degree, premeditated murder in the deaths of 25 year-old Megan Londo and 20 year old John Cadotte. The two were found beaten and stabbed in a burned south Moorhead apartment.
November 14th, during Fargo’s first day of snow, a massive power outage would cut power to more than 50,000 people in Fargo and West Fargo. The weather had nothing to do with it, a breaker was tripped at several substations around town.
On November 23rd arson charges were filed against 33 year-old Tara Andvik. It came after a rash of fires broke out on her property. Andvik pointed fingers at others for starting them.
In the last quarter of the year, our area would see two lives lost well before they should have been taken. It was October 27th when Eleni Wilson, a senior at West Fargo High School, would be taken off life support. She collapsed during theater rehearsal after suffering a brain aneurysm.
Just weeks later on November 18th, Myrel Schermerhorn, a 17 year-old from Frazee was hospitalized after flipping his car on an icy road and into a pond. He was submerged for 20 minutes. Nearly a month later on December 12th Myrel lost his battle and died.
