Weather permitting; it’s a phrase we often hear during winter, but this year, those two words have a strange meaning. Since opening 23 days ago, all of Fargo Park's 18 outdoor ice rinks have only been open five days.
Today, the Bennett rink remained shut for safety reasons. The warm weather is causing ice to melt, leading to standing water. The rinks aren't freezing from the bottom up, causing even more problems.
Clay Whittlesey – Fargo Parks Director of Recreation: “When we try to flood with our trucks, it's been so warm that we try to go and they'll actually break through and then of course, we'll have ruts in the ice as well and it's just difficult to make good ice because we can't get the equipment on there to clean or sweep."
The record temperatures aren't all bad. The park district is saving money because there's less maintenance and fewer workers to pay. Skaters enjoy it as well.
Jack Hilt – Fargo: “I like it because we can come out here and my dad will stay out here because he won't get too cold and I don't like it because I can't play in the snow.”
