Fargo, ND (WDAY Sports) - At Six, we showed you the 2007 instant classic between NDSU and Sam Houston State, that finished with a thrilling comeback from the Bison. Tonight, we relive the 2009 rematch.
NDSU and Sam Houston State were searching for their first win of the season. The Bearkats led 24-7 at halftime, but the Bison started to rumble. Pat Paschall cut the lead to 10 with this 51 yard touchdown run.
That was the first of 4 2nd half touchdowns for NDSU. Nick Mertens found current Punter Matt Voigtlander for another score.
Trailing by 8 with under 3 minutes to go, Mertens followed his rushing touchdown, by scoring the 2-point conversion tying the game at 45-all with 2:43 left. But, the Bearkats converted a big 3rd and long when Blake Joseph found Jason Madkins, who outran the Bison 51 yards to the 10 yard line.
The home team would drill the 24-yard Field Goal with 26 seconds left for a 3-point lead. This time there would be no magical comeback. Bison players were scheduled to report tonight to start preparing for January 7th's National Championship game.
