This groups motto is Northern Latitudes with Caribbean Attitudes, and While you may think they would prefer to be somewhere like Key West... There is no place they would rather be than St. Mary's Essentia Hospital, says the groups president Jim Brogren.
Jim: “It is the highlight of Christmas for many of us, we really really enjoy it, just the smiles on peoples faces when we give them the bears, you know a lot of them we are their only visitors.”
With operation teddy bear, these Parrot Heads deliver teddy bears and other stuffed animals to St. Mary patients and to area nursing homes on Christmas morning.
Jim: “We do a lot of community service projects, like this, this is one of our club favorites.”
The members of this group are dedicated to volunteering and raising funds for charity. Brogren says this event is more special than any other and there is an important reason they choose the hospital and nursing homes.
Jim: “The retirement homes, you know a lot of them don't really don't have family around and you know they just, their smiles are just huge when they see us coming, when they see Santa hats and teddy bears, and you know the soft feely things they just really like that, and it is no fun to be in the hospital on Christmas day so we definitely like to stop here and just give a bear out to everyone in the hospital.”
There is one patient who normally gives her stuffed animals to her grand children.. But she says this one is all hers.
Hazel Johnson (patient): “Oh ill keep him, ill put him by my pillow when I get home.”
Hazel Johnson says although she would rather be home for the holidays.. Special gifts like her special bear make it easier to be in the hospital for Christmas.
Hazel: “It makes me feel like a kid again.”
After the Parrot Heads along with Mr. And Mrs. Claus walk every hall and visit every room dropping off special furry friends... They know there work is done until next year.
The group passed out nearly 300 bears.
