Lisbon, ND (WDAY TV) - Many North Dakotans are looking forward to a brown Christmas including people in Lisbon. Heavy snow can lead to flooding and Lisbon has been hit hard with flooding for the past three years. The Sheyenne River reached a record 22 feet in 2009.
Right now it's at a normal level of four to six feet. The flooding damaged homes and roads and forced the city to build temporary levees. The city is now in the red by three million dollars because of flooding.
ROSS COLE - Lisbon Mayor: "We're still paying for the last three years so a nice reprieve would be good this year so if we could have a year off it would help a lot."
Mayor Cole says the city is trying to get FEMA aid and may have to access taxes to get the budget back on track.
