A real-life Grinch has stolen a tree from a Fergus Falls front yard. Police are now searching for a suspect who stole a symbol of Christmas.
Police say the thief snuck into the yard overnight and snatched the tree. Now all that's left of the 8 foot tall evergreen is this tiny stump.
Tam Hackler - Neighbor: “I do feel bad because it takes a while to grow the trees."
Police say an axe-wielding suspect chopped the tree down, dragged it to their car, and drove away.
Tam Hacker: "Like I said I hope whoever took it is enjoying it."
Tam Hackler lives just across the street, and her yard sports an evergreen quite similar in size.
Tam Hackler: "If they would've chopped this one down over here, It would've been kinda sad but I would've had to laugh. Okay, if you're that hard up where you want to take it go ahead."
Hackler can't understand how it could possibly be worth it.
Tam Hackler: “Go buy one from the Boy Scouts, they don't cost that much."
And on the other side of the block, Larry Streif says it’s sad to see stealing during the holiday season.
Larry Streif - Neighbor: "Oh it’s horrible, and if they ever stopped and thought for a minute, how could they do that to somebody and live with themselves and know they stole a Christmas tree?"
While in the Christmas tale, the Grinch grows a larger heart, the only thing that may grow here will have to be a new tree.
We weren't able to get a hold of the property owner. Police say if caught, the suspect could face misdemeanor charges for theft.
