Oak Grove students experience international Christmas traditions

Some local elementary students aren't creating traditional Christmas projects like tree decorations, and Santa paintings. Instead, they’re taking a trip around the world with knowledgeable tour guides who are also fellow Grovers.

Students here at Oak Grove elementary are learning new Christmas traditions; some they may have never learned unless they traveled to another country all thanks to 19 international high school students. The international students at Oak Grove come from all over the world, places like Japan, Germany, and Thailand.

They bring with them traditions and customs not known to many elementary students. These kids get to learn to use chop sticks, paint Japanese symbols, and take part in a traditional South African dance.

Oak Grove officials say the international students learn so much about the American culture and this is a good way for them to give back and show their classmates a little something out of the ordinary.

Kimberly Herzog – Oak Grove Lutheran: “The elementary students really learn a lot from different cultures and they love to just be interactive and learn little things that they have never seen before and might not see again.”

This is the first year the school has done something like this, but they say seeing the joy on all the students faces means it won’t be the last. The international students got to spend 40 minutes with each group of students.
