An Underwood, Minnesota man who admitted slitting the throat of a pet dog, has been sentenced in Otter Tail County court today.
23 year-old Benjamin Stavaas admitted to using a knife to cut the throat of a dog named, Star. Court documents say Stavaas was angry at the dog for chasing after a car. A neighbor found the injured dog, and brought it to a vet.
Prosecutors researched animal cruelty laws in other cities, and asked for a sentence based on the most serious of those. A judge agreed to a level slightly lower, a year in jail.
Heather Brandborg – Assitant Otter Tail County Attorney: “The public is very interested in cases like these against defenseless animals. People sent stacks of letters to the judge and the court provided copies for review for consideration before the sentencing.”
Since Stavass has been in jail several months, he will serve just 5 days as part of today's sentence.
