A special lighting brings people with mental illness out of the darkness. The Celebration of Lights began in 1986. Tonight, supporters and advocates gathered at West Acres Mall to mark the ceremony. Mental Health America of North Dakota sponsored the tree tradition. The hope is to brighten a life by lighting a light for someone special on a spectacular tree. This is just one of several commemorative trees throughout the state.
Jane Sinner – Former First Lady of North Dakota: “During the holidays, there's a lot of stress, there's a lot of anxiety, there's a lot of depression and we felt that we could bring more visibility to the Mental Health Association at this time of year, than any other.”
You can buy a light in honor of a loved one, by going to mhand.org. Money goes to mental health programs.
