Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - You may be going to one this season: An ugly sweater Christmas party. These parties are more than just fun; they're also helping area non-profits.

You may be going to one this season: An ugly sweater Christmas party. These parties are more than just fun; they're also helping area non-profits.

Julie Adams donates regularly to the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch Thrift Store, but today she's the one shopping.

Julie Adams – Thrift Store Customer: "My family decided this year for Christmas Day we would do kind of an ugly sweater type of a theme."

Adams isn't the only one committing a fashion faux pas.

Rachel: "Do you have many sweaters left?"

Kirk Hawley – Dakota Boys & Girls Ranch: "No we don't we're just about out."

Sweater sales go right back to the non-profit-which served about 1,140 families and kids last year. The eight thrift stores are a major funding source, generating more than $700,000 a year. Party goers are also coming here to the St. Vincent de Paul Society Thrift Store. They're looking for sweaters about as ugly as this one."

Terri Schwartz – St. Vincent de Paul Society: “Everyday there's someone coming in looking for ugly sweaters.”

Sweaters that help with funding. This thrift store alone provides up to $150,000 a year for St. Vincent de Paul.

Terri Schwartz: “Yes definitely because that money goes back into the store, which goes into the store which goes into the outreach center so we're able to help people pay their rent, light and electricity and other things.”

Help that starts with donated items.

The Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch on 32nd Avenue says it sees a 10-20% increase in ugly sweater sales.
