Thousands more Bison fans will have the opportunity to see the big playoff game this weekend after ESPN backed down and changed its mind. After a heated battle between business owners and fans, ESPN will now allow CableOne to broadcast the game on GamePlan. One bar manager who was bracing for bad business is now scrambling to be able to show the big game.
Owner of Chubs Pub Jason Ramstad says the news that ESPN will now air the Bison game on its GamePlan pay-per-view couldn't have come at a better time. Earlier he was preparing for a not so busy Saturday, but he says this news will hopefully make things a little different.
Jason Ramstad – General Manager, Chubs Pub: “It is great, it is great for the community, it is great for the state, I mean granted it happened at the 11th hour, but this is great news for anybody who couldn't get a ticket and now can watch the game.”
Last Saturday this bar was packed from open to close with fans ready to cheer on their Bison. Ramstad says he was disappointed to know that this might not have been the situation this Saturday. Ramstad even put up a petition letter in the pub to encourage people to call ESPN and their cable provider to help make a change to their initial decision. He now says without this and the help from local authorities the overruling of the decision to not air the game might not have been possible.
Jason Ramstad: “You've got some political traction from like Senator Flackoll , to Mr. Berg, Mr. Conrad's office, Stenehjem’s office, the 10,000 people that made phone calls to ESPN, the university, the University Presidents, everybody involved that basically knocked on ESPN door and said hey we want this game it is important to our community, and I think it is great news.
Now this pub will have the big game on every TV so these empty tables will once again be filled. Ramstad says the only thing that will make this new decision better will be a victory for the Bison this weekend.
The Bison NCAA FCS Quarterfinals against Lehigh will be broadcast Saturday at 3 PM. It'll be on ESPN's GamePlan package for purchase, in addition to ESPN3.com.
With less than 24-hours until game time, tickets still remain for the Bison - Lehigh football game. It has been a steady stream of people at the Bison ticket office al day. There are about 200 standing room only tickets left. The Bison have had over 18,000 fans at all but one home game this year.
Troy Goergen – Associate AD for Marketing: “They've been very brisk obviously with the short windows we've had to work with. We've had a week to sell 18,000 tickets, it's created a lot of activity in the ticket office.”
The ticket office will open back up at 10 tomorrow morning.
