Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) -- If you're buying a real Christmas tree, a few tips to keep it fresh through the holidays.
Ryan Hoss is a tree expert at Baker Garden and Gift in Fargo. He says the most important thing people can do is buy a freshly cut tree. After you get it home, cut a one inch deep mark on the stump to help the tree absorb more water. Hoss recommends using warm water first, then room temperature after that. Some people think aspirin, 7Up, and miracle grow will help the tree, but it can actually damage it.
Ryan says, “The issue that usually stops a tree from drinking is the water get filmy or scummy, the needles will fall in there over time and the water gets cloudy, and it is that cloudiness that eventually plug up those microscopic little vessels that control and absorb the water.”
Your tree will dry out much faster if it's next to a heat source
