MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — Mandan High School head football coach Pat O'Brien has resigned, less than a month after being named AAA coach of the year.

O'Brien this season guided the Braves to the state semifinals, where they lost on a last-second field goal to eventual state champion Bismarck. The 9-2 season was the best in O'Brien's seven years at the helm.

The 53-year-old O'Brien tells The Bismarck Tribune (http://bit.ly/ruKerd ) that he still loves to coach but wants to spend more time with his sons. He will remain a physical education teacher at the high school.

O'Brien has been a part of the Mandan football program as an assistant or head coach for 17 seasons. He says he will "bleed black and white until they put me in the ground."
