BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Residents in parts of the Dakotas are on alert for winter-like weather as a system crosses the Northern Plains.

The National Weather Service has posted various winter weather advisories and warnings for the western two-thirds of North Dakota and much of western South Dakota.

The heaviest snowfall is expected in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, where the forecast calls for as much as 9 inches. In North Dakota, the heavier snow is expected in the northwest, with amounts reaching 5 inches.

Strong winds are expected to blow the snow around and make travel in the region difficult.
