Official says early ice in ND might not be safe

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Winter anglers in North Dakota are being urged to use caution when venturing out onto the ice this early in the season.

State Game and Fish water safety coordinator Nancy Boldt says several consecutive days of cold weather are needed to produce stable ice, and the state so far hasn't seen many days when the high temperature remained below freezing.

Boldt recommends that anglers be cautious over the next several weeks and not be reckless on the early ice. She says checking with local anglers and bait shops about ice conditions is a good idea.
