Fargo man overcomes adversity to help others

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - A senior citizen isn't letting a recent setback get in the way of volunteering this holiday season. This year, 85 year old Howard Paulson is ringing the bell for the Salvation Army to raise money to help people in need.

A senior citizen isn't letting a recent setback get in the way of volunteering this holiday season. This year, 85 year old Howard Paulson is ringing the bell for the Salvation Army to raise money to help people in need.

Howard Paulson is ringing the bell here at the Hornbacher’s in Osgood. After suffering a stroke last March, Paulson is glad to be back doing what he loves, volunteering. Paulson has volunteered year after year with the Salvation Army during the Christmas season.

Because of his stroke he is now in a wheelchair and his left side is paralyzed. He also lost his speech because of the Stroke, but his caregiver Joan Saye says he is working hard to get it back. As people put their money in the red kettle, Paulson is sure to say thank you the best he can.

Joan Saye - Caregiver: “It gives him a sense of independence and doing things that he used to do instead of being confined to the chair, he's trying to say just because he is confined to that chair that he still can do things that he used to do if he applies himself.”

Paulson hopes his work will inspire younger people to give back. As he rings the bell in his right hand, he is doing the most good, as good as he can.

Saye says Paulson has always been a very generous man, and has always volunteered.
