Barnes County North school board seeks direction

SPIRITWOOD, N.D. (AP) — The Barnes County North School Board is looking for direction after voters rejected a centralized school building three times in about a year.

A meeting is planned Wednesday night in Spiritwood for residents of the southeast North Dakota school district to provide input on what steps the board should take.

Voters in September 2010, last April and last month rejected a centralized school near Leal to replace facilities north of Rogers, at Wimbledon and at Spiritwood. Supporters say a central school would better serve students and save money, while opponents question the cost in light of declining enrollment.

Superintendent Doug Jacobson says one option is forming a building authority that could sell bonds to build a new school that it then would lease to the school district.
