Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Many people are giving thanks for their time with family. Other community members are working hard, making sure the rest of us have a safe, happy holiday.
As Officer Shawn Greigo makes the rounds, his family's at home preparing a turkey dinner.
Shawn Griego – Moorhead Police: "I get the convenience of going home at lunch and eating with them, leaving, and they can clean up."
He's one of the many people paid to keep us safe this season.
Griego: "I understand that its important we work today so its something I signed up for."
Griego's not alone. Over at the Fargo Fire Department. These firefighters are on a 24-hour shift.
Capt. Jason Ness – Fargo Fire Department: "I've been doing this job for about 10 years now so you get used to it."
Ness' positive attitude is shared by nurses at Sanford.
Sarah Moquist: "Our patients aren't able to be with their families either and all my patients are from out of town so you know if I can bring a little cheer to them it might be worth it."
While Bailee Dickson checks charts, her family's in Carrington carving turkey.
Bailee Dickson: "We can't change everything and we can't send them home if they aren't doing well, but we do the best we can to try and make them have a good holiday also."
These hard workers have other, more schedule-friendly holiday plans.
Moquist: "I'm going to go over to a friend's after work. She and her family invited me over so it was really nice of them."
Ness: "We have Thanksgiving dinner with the staff on duty."
Maggie Olson – Sanford RN: "We are also having a potluck today so someone brought turkey and a bunch of good stuff."
Back in the patrol car, Greigo reflects on the day.
Griego: "The day isn't that important, its mostly just being together."
For Griego, family time is something he doesn't take for granted.
