A recent Xcel Energy power outage that affected almost the entire city of Fargo isn't helping the company’s case for a rate increase. Public Service Commissioner Brian Kalk visited with Jay Thomas today, discussing the proposed rate increase. He wants the new outage included in the commissions discussions. On Tuesday, more than 50,000 customers in Fargo and West Fargo lost power for about 30 minutes. Xcel says the outage was caused by an overload of power during maintenance on a substation.

“Brian Kalk – ND Public Service Commissioner: “I’ve asked our staff to get a record developed about what happened during this outage and get that submitted to be a part of this rate case and reliability in the system has become a major issue.”

Xcel is proposing a 2.6% percent increase for 2012.
