A very unsettling lunch hour for those in downtown Jamestown this afternoon. Jamestown Police have arrested one man after a 2 hour stand off that forced the evacuation of some people in the business district there. What started as a high speed chase ended in the heart of Jamestown with automatic weapons drawn on a suicidal man. This warning, the following video is graphic.

The man, for more than an hour, held a gun to his head to under his chin, threatening to take his own life. According to the state patrol, it all started when the man sped away from a trooper during a traffic stop on Interstate-94.

The man then drove into Jamestown and later fled on foot, ending up near an alley downtown, where he then displayed a weapon which started a stand off with police. Several area law enforcement agencies came on scene, as did a negotiator. Because of a noon crowd, some areas of the busy downtown were evacuated as a precaution.

Captain Brian Niewind – ND State Patrol: “Kind of unusual for us, we do not have a lot of pursuits happened in the middle of the day so it was for these circumstances unusual for us.”

The North Dakota State Patrol is handling the investigation. The man involved in the standoff is in the Stutsman County Jail.
